John was born in Townsend and raised in Stanford, Montana.  He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Montana in 1971 and his Juris Doctor from the University of Montana School of Law in 1976.  During law school, John was inducted as a member of the Phi Delta Phi legal fraternity.  John has been engaged in the private practice of law since 1976.  He was elected County Attorney of Judith Basin County, serving in that position from 1978-1984.  He was also elected as District Court Judge for the Tenth Judicial District Court of the State of Montana in 1995 and served in that position until 2000.

John focuses his practice in the areas of agricultural law, personal injury, real property disputes, commercial litigation, water law, trust and estate litigation, estate planning and probate and mediation.  He represents individuals, small business owners and farmers and ranchers across the State of Montana.  John is admitted to practice law in the state courts of Montana, the United States District Court for the District of Montana and the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.  He is a member of the State Bar of Montana, the Yellowstone County Bar Association and the Montana Trial Lawyers Association.
